Follow Your Hearts

followyourheartaOnce upon a time it was a wicker headboard. By the time I rescued it from next to a dumpster it had no legs – but loads of promise.

I thought it would make a nice piece of wedding décor so I gave it a couple of coats of white spray paint. Then I got a long bristled paint brush and a dish of homemade chalk paint and tried to get into all the grooves the spray paint couldn’t reach.

I tried it over my bed. It kinda fit with my rustic country furniture.

But in the end I went back to the original plan. I attached a picket that came from a gate my neighbours were hauling to the dump (after scrubbing and painting it, of course).

Then I applied some lettering to make it more welcoming. I could see it being used for a wedding or engagement party or really any event or facility where the guests might need a little direction.

Betty Boop Centrepiece

Initially this antique chamber pot was going to be a porch planter; then I added the candles and made it a Valentine’s centerpiece. I thought the Betty Boop lunch box (not vintage, but a replica of the 1950s cartoon character) resembled a heart-shaped balloon, so I taped it to a garden stake and to give it height like a balloon would have.

Valentine’s Junk Arrows

Just two weeks until Valentine’s Day and department stores and home décor are doing a roaring business in  all things of any reddish hue or shaped like hearts and arrows.

But decorating for the annual celebration of love needn’t be costly.  In fact, your garage and attic (and the waste bin) probably have the raw materials for a unique and charming Valentine’s decorations.

Above is a photo of a handful of junk that I gathered to make a number of junky cupid’s arrows.

A vintage and very worn fireplace brush topped a with a rusty antique cookie cutter are a good start.

Added to a painted grapevine wreath made seasonal with some cuttings of Heather from the garden and I have a Valentine’s wreath that is unlike any other.

Fencing on Fence Valentine Wreath

We’ve all seen it sticking out of trash cans or recycling bins: that plastic coated wire  garden edging fence. For the first time, I stopped and picked up several panels from a neighbour’s curbside.

I quickly started listing potential uses I could put this to, especially after accompanying a friend to a local dollar store and noting that they charge $2 per  panel.

Because it is multi-material and there is such a small amount of metal, it won’t be easily recycled. Those qualities also make a great candidate for reuse or repurposing.

With Valentine’s Day on my mind I spent  2 minutes separating two of the panels and turning them into a very simple but pretty heart gate wreath.

It is as simple as laying one straight up and down and lay the second panel on top of the first sideways. Turn them on a slight angle and they make a perfect heart. Two acutally, the interior panels form a 2nd heart. I think you could use any kind of lightweight wire, thread or exterior glue to hold them. I used two tiny pieces of white medical tape (commonly found in first aid kits), which I had readily at hand and which is almost invisible on the white plastic coating

When our office date stamp reached the end of years (2014) it was headed for the trash bin. But I saw a new opportunity.

By removing the year altogether, I had a stamp that can be used to personalized hand-made ribbon for any day of the year.

For Valentine's Day I tore long strips of cotton and hand stamped Feb 14 from one end to the other. I wanted a handmade, irregular look so I just eyeballed rather than measuring the spacing.

On one of the strips I left it in the simple black date, but on a second strip I employed a heart-shaped stamp I picked up at a thrift store.

In addition to days like Valentine's Day, handmade ribbon can be stamped with dates of family and friends' birthdates, weddings, etc.
